Range Statement

This section specifies work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included. Relevant personnel must include at least one of the following:

site personnel

supervisor or team leader

team member.

Compliance requirements must include:

commonwealth, state and territory legislation relating to waste receipt, including:

environmental protection

hazardous substances and dangerous goods

industry codes

work health and safety.

Nature of required service must relate to:

delivery of hazardous and dangerous waste or non-conforming waste

delivery of reusable or recyclable waste.


Performance Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also receive and coordinate waste unloading on two different occasions.

While coordinating the above waste receipt and unloading, the person must:

review waste receipt schedules to identify work requirements

discuss and confirm the nature of the required service with the waste provider

identify and organise the site, personnel and equipment required to receive waste

screen waste to identify waste types and characteristics including hazardous and dangerous waste, non-conforming waste and reusable or recyclable waste

measure and record waste and accurately calculate fees and charges for the receipt of waste based on waste types and quantities

monitor the unloading site to ensure appropriate waste containment and storage

record accurate payments and issue receipts for waste received

use signalling techniques and give unloading instructions to the waste provider to ensure safe and efficient unloading of waste in the designated unloading area

follow organisational procedures and comply with regulatory and legal requirements while receiving waste.


Knowledge Evidence

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

classifications of dangerous goods

hazards and risks associated with waste receipt activities including hazardous substances and dangerous goods

industry-approved signalling techniques

methods for sampling waste loads

organisational policies and procedures and regulatory and legal requirements relating to waste receipt

resource recovery options, including:

environmental issues and regulations

potential resources to be recovered

recycling options

timeframe to recover resources

valuable resources within materials

types, streams and characteristics of waste including hazardous and dangerous waste and non-conforming waste streams

waste containment techniques for unloading areas.
